At the start of June 2021 I started focusing on my diet and exercise. I joined Slimming World and continued with my cardio as usual. However, I knew I needed to work on my strength too, something I’d only done previously during set classes such as body pump and circuit training.

I’d been toying with the idea of a Personal Trainer for a while when I finally plucked up the courage to approach Matt. And by ‘approach Matt’ I mean casually ask his wife (a good friend of mine) if he’d be interested in working with me. You see, the idea of working with a PT in a gym setting was intimidating and I wanted to work with someone I trusted. I wasn’t sure if Matt would be interested as his clients at that point were professional boxers; I wasn’t sure an overweight mother of two with the upper body strength of a toddler would be his desired clientele. However, Matt was as excited about working with me as I was getting fit (and that’s not sarcasm, by the way).

As I drove to my first session I felt anxious. A combination of fear that my ability would let me down and low confidence in my physique (despite having lost 19lbs at that point) played on my mind. However, within minutes all that evaporated thanks to Matt. Before I arrived I’d given Matt an idea of my goals and concerns and he’d prepared a plan for the session which we started on after a brief chat. Matt demonstrated everything, explaining the ‘what’, ‘why’, ‘where’ and ‘how’ before setting me to work. He monitored my progress and technique and adjusted the intensity and rest times accordingly. At no point did I feel any of the things I’d been fearing (I actually really enjoyed it!).

I left feeling incredibly motivated and happy (so much so that a friend who saw me right after was so caught up in my excitement she signed up too). This motivation has remained since.

Today will be my 6th 1:1 session in 3 weeks and I can already see and feel a difference. Matt checks in regularly between sessions to ask how my weight loss and cardio are doing, sends me articles and videos he thinks I’ll be interested in and was available to plan some weight sessions I did alone at home with my own equipment.

I completely trust Matt and have confidence that he will help me achieve my goals which, despite being far in the distance, I know believe in myself are wholly achievable thanks to Matt.

Asking Matt to train with me has been one of the best decisions I’ve made and I’m excited to see what we can achieve over the coming weeks and months.
